Warehouse Racking

Warehouse racking is an important part of warehouse infrastructure, this system can hinder or accelerate operations in a warehouse. With proper installation of warehouse racking, warehouse managers can maximise and optimise their warehouse facility to improve efficiency and streamline the picking process.

In addition, warehouse layouts play a significant role in warehouse racking as aisle width, docking locations, shipping, and more which impact the warehouse racking options.

Different Types of Warehouse Racking

In Dubai, there are different types of warehouse racking systems which are commonly called pallet racks or materials handling systems. Wooden, metal, or plastic pallets also called skids are integrated into a larger shelving system constructed with shelves at different heights. Decking bases are accessible at various widths to engage objects positioned on the racks in storage.

In several cases, warehouse racking is various feet higher and needs forklifts for inventory loading. There are various possible configurations for warehouse racking systems including selective racks, drive-in or drive-through racks, push-back racks, and flow racks.

Selective Racks

This is the most widely used pallet system which offers access from an aisle. This specific warehouse racking system is suitable for narrow aisle racking, standard systems, and deep-reach systems. Selective racks need to accommodate a unique pallet in-depth and need special narrow lift trucks.

Drive-In & Drive-Through Racks

Drive-in and drive-through racks are the right choice for high-density storage. In most cases it is constructed using steel, hence, this warehouse racking system contains sufficient space for a forklift to move into its bay. Also, it is essential to understand that drive-in racks facilitate one entrance and exist, however, drive-through racks are accessible on both ends of the bay.

As a result, drive-in racks are efficient for the last-in, first-out (LIFO) process mainly deployed for nonperishable products or those with a low turnover. In contrast, a drive-through system needs a first-in, first-out (FIFO) process. Drive-in and drive-through racks are the floor-to-ceiling structures.

Push Back Racking Systems

Pushback racking is normally used for bulk storage where this system stores products that span over 2 to 5 pallets. When a pallet is fully loaded onto the system, it pushes back the next pallet, and when one pallet is unloaded, it will push the system to the front. Moreover, the pushback system uses the process of the LIFO system and often facilitates inclined rails, sliding carts, and double lanes.

Cantilever Racking:

This type of racking is appropriate for storing huge items such as steel, furniture, and heavy building materials, including metal beams, etc. The special characteristics of cantilever racking help to easily load and unload the materials with the forklifts.

Carton Flow Racks:

Carton flow racks are designed for massive operations like case and piece pick applications like high-scale grocery chains, etc. In this rack, the stored items are kept safe in cartons. These storage racks have wheels installed on the shelves, allowing smooth operations and the efficient flow of the stored cartons to the front when picking up the items from the front. This shelving method is an effective way to improve product storage efficiency.

Flow Racks

It is also called a gravity rack since it is used for high-density storage. With this warehouse racking system, goods can be loaded at the higher end and omitted at the lower end by facilitating the FIFO system. The rotation of items tends to be automatic as the racks flow with loading and unloading. Flow racks rely on gravity rollers that transform in conjunction with the rack load and facilitate brakes or speed controllers to safeguard product transfer. One important benefit of flow racks is that it does not need electricity for operations since gravity empowers them.

In conclusion, these are some of the important types of warehouse racking systems, choose the right storage solution from this according to your business needs.
